The plot thickens: more arrests made over violence at Sunderland

Northumbria Police this morning confirmed they have arrested yet more people in connection with a mass brawl on a Sunderland city centre street before the match between Sunderland and West Ham at the Stadium of Light last month. Two men aged 51 and 28 from Houghton; a man aged 26 from Gateshead; two boys aged 16 (one from Sunderland and one from Washington) and a 15 year old boy from Spennymoor have all been arrested on suspicion of violent disorder. Fourteen people have now been arrested in connection with the case; eleven have been bailed pending further enquiries while a further three remain in custody helping with enquiries. The incident, which involved both Sunderland and West Ham supporters, happened at around 2.15pm at Revolution bar at Low Row before the match on January 12. All the men arrested so far are believed to be Sunderland supporters, and Chief Superintendent Kay Blyth told the Sunderland Echo "there are still thirteen images in circulation of people we need to speak to- we have reason to believe that some of these may have connections in the Hartlepool area. This sort of incident is unusual but we will do everything possible to make sure that those suspected of being involved are traced and the appropriate action taken." Met Police are still in pursuit of the West Ham fans involved. The investigation continues.
