No new deal for Allardyce until survival secured: Gold

West Ham co-chairman David Gold has said that talks over a new contract for manager Sam Allardyce will not even begin until Premier League survival has been secured for the Hammers. In a statement on whufc.com- interestingly timed, with said statement going up on the club website immediately after Christian Benteke had put Aston Villa a goal up in yesterday's 2-1 defeat at Villa Park- Gold confirmed that no discussions about a new deal would be held until safety was assured. "This is purely because we don't want to distract attention from our aim of finishing as high up the Premier League table as possible," the 73 year old stated. This statement from the chairman, combined with his obviously frustrated tweet after the game yesterday ("Disappointed for the fans who travelled hundreds of miles on a miserable day to lose to a team in the bottom three. We should do better") has sparked all-too-inevitable press speculation about Big Sam's future at the club. However, this really isn't anything out of the ordinary. The cases of managers being rewarded with new contracts mid-season are rare and truly exceptional; this, quite frankly, isn't news. In the event that Big Sam takes us down, obviously he isn't going to get a new contract. I do worry about the state of journalism in this country sometimes...
