I want Sam to stay but we need to be successful: Gold

West Ham co-chairman David Gold has reiterated his statement made on Sunday that manager Sam Allardyce will not hear anything about a new contract at Upton Park until he has guided the team to Premier League survival. Speaking on the Footballers' Football Show last night, Mr Gold stated that "until we know the division we're going to be in next season, it is very difficult to sit down with Sam. What I hope is that we retain our Premier League status, that we finish in the top half of the table and that we sit down and formulate a new contract that will take us forward. The 73 year old also raised an interesting point about what Allardyce himself might want- "would Sam want to stay if we were relegated? That's an interesting scenario because he's an experienced Premier League manager; if we're not successful than Sam might not want to stay with us. I want him to stay because for him to stay, we have to be successful." The chairman said that he "wouldn't say" the Hammers are safe from the drop yet, but that with the 30 points we have on the board, we "should be ok at this stage" although, as he points out, "in this business you can't count on anything, and I use the word business very loosely!"

As far as us fans go, it's as you were, basically. No new contract for Sam till we're safe; nothing confirmed yet. Watch this space though- as Mr Gold says, you can't count on anything in football.
