A great day for non-stories: Metro the culprit this time

Just one of those days for football news? The Metro has just published an article on its website under the unambiguous headline "West Ham chairman David Gold retweets fans' pleas to appoint Di Canio." Now, call me old-fashioned, but unless it's a vital piece of news, I fail to see how activity on Twitter can be headline news- for any newspaper. In this case, it's not even as if Mr Gold's retweets are particularly controversial, for although he retweeted a tweet reading "Sack Sam Get Paolo pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee from all WHUFC fans," the chairman also retweeted tweets reading "Please DO NOT hire Di Canio, no matter what people say he is not ready to manage at the top level, nice bloke but not ready!" and "As much as I love Di Canio, he is nowhere near ready for West Ham or the Premier League. Big Sam has done a great job"- hardly retweets designed to "undermine Allardyce's position," as the Metro's Danny Griffiths seems convinced that is the case. It's a blessing we have these non stories cropping up really; they serve as a reminder not to take our country's media too seriously...
